It is election season. That means our lives will be flooded with election campaign ads, dirty politics, talking points, and political rhetoric. We will hear from and about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton constantly until the November election, yet neither of them will say anything of real substance or address the issues facing our country with any real clarity or purpose. CNN and the larger media machine will try to convince you that Hillary Clinton is the best possible presidential candidate ever. Conversely, FoxNews and a much smaller portion of the media machine will try to make you believe that Donald Trump is the only hope for the future of our nation. There is one thing you can take as undeniable truth from both networks. They will bend and manipulate the news in order to propagate their particular political agendas. That is the problem.
Have you ever stopped to consider how it is possible for CNN and FoxNews to exist as they currently do? How is it possible that the citizens of our country have accepted these as the only two options for “reporting” the news? CNN is unashamedly liberal in its version of the news while FoxNews serves as the voice of the conservative side of the spectrum. These two news networks only serve as the faces of a larger epidemic of biased media coverage. Why have the masses not cried out and demanded a third voice; the voice of the truth? How is it that Americans have not created a market for a news network that simply reports the news truthfully regardless of how it affects a particular political party or movement? The answer is amazingly simple; Americans don’t want the truth.
The great majority of Americans are not interested in the truth. They are interested in the version of the truth that agrees with their own political and moral leanings. The concept of honest dialogue and the exchange of ideas has long been absent from the political scene in America. Instead of carefully and thoughtfully seeking out the most qualified and capable candidates for political office, we instead look for the candidates that agree with us and can promise to give us the most stuff. That may be a bit reductionist but it strikes at the core of the problem. It is a problem that is not unique to Americans or Europeans. It is the problem that plagues all of mankind; our hearts are wicked, thus we despise the truth.
That is the very issue that Paul addresses to Timothy in . “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” The reason people will reject sound teaching is because sound teaching confronts sin. People do not like to be confronted about their sin because they have been convinced their entire lives that they are a good person. The truth shatters such a notion to pieces. It declares that we live in darkness () and that we have rebelled against God () and have become morally bankrupt (). We are not good. No one is (). Mankind has always hated that truth and apart from the grace of God will always hate that truth and rebel against it ().
But grace is exactly what is proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is grace wrapped in truth. The truth that you are a sinner (). The truth that you deserve to go to hell (). The truth that Jesus lived a sinless life (). It a grace wrapped in the truth that he died on a cross and bore the sins of many (). It is defined by the truth that he rose from the grave () and has ascended into heaven () and will one day return for his own (). These are absolute non-negotiable truths established by the one that is the Truth (). This gospel, this grace is our only hope.
There have been many that have lamented the laughably poor choice we have before us for the next president of the United States of America. Their point is quite valid. It is easy to point to Hillary Clinton’s numerous scandals and her glaring lack of character and see that she is not fit to be president. Likewise, one can readily point to Donald Trump’s lack of tact and diplomacy as well as his thirst for power and see that he is not qualified for the office either. Yet, one of them will be in the oval office in January. It is time we stop putting our hope in our politicians and our government and return to the only source of hope; the truth as found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s ironic that in a country that is built on the principles of freedom we would hate the one very thing that will truly set us free ().
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (ESV)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (ESV)
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (ESV)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (ESV)
10 as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;
11 no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.” (ESV)
9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (ESV)

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (ESV)
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. (ESV)
28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. (ESV)
14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. (ESV)
9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. (ESV)
10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (ESV)
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (ESV)
The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (ESV)
