Jesus told us that we should expect the world to hate us because it hated Him first (). We bear His Name and we are conformed to His likeness through sanctification. It follows quite naturally that the world would hate us in much the same way that it hated our Lord. Extreme persecution for identifying with Jesus may be foreign to the experience of many, if not most, of the followers of Christ in the American church. That does not negate the validity of what Jesus said. If anything, it calls into question the validity of our testimony for Christ, but that is for another post.
Christians across the globe are making great sacrifices in the name of Jesus. They are beaten, disowned, arrested, and killed because they have put their trust in the Risen Christ and not in the inventions of man. As they experience the suffering that will one day come to America let us join together in praying for them and for their testimony. Their faith in the midst of persecution will speak louder than the message of their abusers. As Tertullian said so many years ago, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.”
